Local Company Celebrates Earth Day, Leads the Way in Recycled Materials for Aggregate Industry
Tilcon-Delaware’s commitment to protecting natural resources is key to program’s success
DOVER, Del. (April 19, 2006) -
Tilcon-Delaware, the area’s largest construction materials supplier and contractor, announced today that it is participating in the Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s 6th Annual Earth Day Festival on April 22, 2006, at Killens Pond State Park.
Tilcon has been an active participant and supporter of the Earth Day Festival since it began in 2001, showcasing the company’s advanced recycling program and helping to educate people about ways everyone can become involved in protecting our natural resources and environment. More than 5,000 people annually attend the event, which features attractions such as EcoTrail, Trash Can Dan’s EcoWorld, craft projects, games, tours and exhibits.
But Tilcon’s commitment to the environment doesn’t end with Earth Day. Its state-of-the-art lab has become a leader in researching, designing and testing recycled materials for use in its unique asphalt mixes.
“What really makes us stand out is our strong commitment to using recycled products instead of looking for alternative natural resources,” said Damian Murphy, Tilcon general manager. “Our first-class research and unique knowledge on the uses of recycled materials and our ability to incorporate recycled materials into our asphalt without any degradation in the final product give us the advantage as environmental concerns increasingly impact the industry.”
For more than 40 years, Tilcon has been using recycled materials throughout all its products. The company’s success with mixes made from recycled product demonstrates that the construction industry can play an active role in protecting our natural resources.
Currently, Tilcon uses recycled hot mix asphalt, concrete and shingles in its mixes, and is experimenting with other recycled materials such as crushed glass and plastics. By using recycled materials throughout, Tilcon helps maintain natural resources, such as aggregate and crude oil, and uses products that would otherwise fill up space in landfills. In addition, recycled materials are cheaper than purchasing or mining for aggregate and save taxpayers money on the cost of building state and local roadways.
“Tilcon is at the forefront of the industry in researching and utilizing recycled materials throughout all of its asphalt mixes,” Murphy said. “Through our dedication to recycling, we’re helping to protect natural resources and the environment for future generations to enjoy.”
Tilcon-Delaware, the region’s leading commercial, public and private infrastructure contractor and construction materials supplier, has been serving the Delmarva Peninsula for half a century. The company is part of the Mid-Atlantic Group of Oldcastle Materials Inc., which includes Harrisburg, Pa.-based Pennsy Supply and Slusser Brothers in West Hazleton, Pa. Tilcon has seven asphalt plants strategically located in Wilmington, Dover, Gumboro and Georgetown, Del., as well as in Delmar, Md., and sand-and-gravel production facilities located in Dover and Little Creek, Del.
